Bonny LeVine Award
Franchising World, February 2007
Mary C. Rogers, President and CEO, Abrakadoodle
This award was created in 1994 in memory of esteemed IFA member and Postal Instant Press co-founder Bonny LeVine in recognition of her outstanding accomplishments in franchising and of her status as a role model for women in the franchising community. The Bonny LeVine Award is bestowed upon a female franchisor or franchisee who has demonstrated ability in franchising as evidenced by her contributions to the growth of the business; contributions to her community through board positions, volunteer work and activities that promote the professional advancement of women; and her contributions as a mentor to women in franchising.
Mary C. Rogers has been involved in franchising for nearly 20 years and has created and built two successful franchise companies. Rogers began her career as a teacher of disabled children and since then has focused her efforts on both franchising and childhood enrichment programs. In 1989, after 10 years of teaching, Rogers co-founded and served as CEO of ECW Corp., the United States international franchisor for Computertots and Computer Explorers.
As CEO, she led that company’s growth to 150 U.S. franchises and licensing programs in 11 countries. Under her leadership, the company received many awards and accolades, including being named “The Number 1 Franchise” in Success magazine’s “Franchise Gold 100” (1992) and consistently earning high rankings in Entrepreneur, the Wall Street Journal and other publications.
Rogers and business partner Karen Marshall were named “Washington Women Entrepreneurs of the Year” by Ernst and Young in 1997, the same year she sold Computertots. Rogers then served as executive director of the IFA’s Educational Foundation from 1998 to 1999 and co-founded her second franchise, Abrakadoodle, in 2002.
Abrakadoodle provides comprehensive art programs for children and began franchising its brand in 2004. After adding 65 units in just two years, Abrakadoodle and Rogers received national recognition. Rogers has been featured in numerous articles, television segments and books as a franchising and education expert and firmly advocates women as franchising professionals and business owners. She has served on the board of trustees of the IFA Educational Foundation, is a current board member and past president of the Capital Area Franchise Association, and was an organizer of the first Women’s Franchising Network meeting in the Washington, D.C. area.
