QC Kinetix Medical Director Explains Why Surgery Isn’t Your Only Option for Joint Pain in Pain Awareness Month Webinar

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In the United States alone, more than 32.5 million Americans are living with osteoarthritis, the most common joint disorder that results in pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion. While many treatment plans involve physical therapy, steroid injections, and surgery, research has been increasingly pointing toward an option offering a second chance at a pain-free life: regenerative medicine. Dr. Ashey Caravelli, DO, a medical director for QC Kinetix Chicagoland, hosted a Pain Awareness Month webinar to uncover the truth about regenerative medicine therapies including stem cell and platelet-rich plasma (PRP) treatments.

“What would your life look like if pain wasn’t holding you back?” asked Dr. Caravelli, a board-certified family medicine physician with a strong foundation in osteopathic principles and a focus on regenerative medicine. “So many patients we treat come to us because they want to redeem the quality of life they once had – mobility, strength, and less pain – without having to undergo invasive surgeries. We want to help patients get back to a pain free life, and at QC Kinetix, we truly believe that better starts here.”

How PRP and Stem Cell Therapies Work

The human body is more resilient than many people realize and is equipped with resources to aid in the healing process. Human blood contains powerful healing components that can be concentrated and precisely delivered to injured areas, including:

  • Platelets: These tiny cell fragments play a crucial role in blood clotting, but they also contain growth factors that signal cells to reduce inflammation and begin repair.
  • Cytokines: These are the proteins found in platelets that act as messengers to coordinate healing responses.

Stem cell and PRP therapies work beyond temporary fixes to address the underlying cause of pain. PRP therapy involves blood drawn from the patient, then the centrifugation of the blood to separate the blood’s components by density. The platelets are then collected and injected into the targeted area to stimulate the body’s healing process.

Stem cells are retrieved from bone marrow aspirate concentrate (BMAC) and are much stronger than PRP therapy, used to trigger the body’s healing response for more significant and prolonged repairs. The bone marrow is commonly harvested from the patient’s posterior pelvic bone in a minimally invasive procedure, then centrifuged to separate the stem cells from other components. Similar to PRP therapy, the stem cells are then injected into the targeted area. Often times, treatments will include a combination of PRP and stem cell treatments to help patients on their healing journey.

Biggest Myths about Joint Pain and Regenerative Medicine

Regenerative medicine therapies often carry many misconceptions. However, research reveals that regenerative medicine is safe and effective for musculoskeletal disorders. Not only does QC Kinetix specialize in safe and natural treatments that tap into the body’s own healing power, but the company also emphasizes education on regenerative medicine to allow patients to make informed decisions about their bodies.

In her webinar, Dr. Caravelli debunked the most common myths about joint pain and regenerative medicine:

  • Myth: Surgery is the only real solution to joint pain.
  • Truth: Many patients receive life-changing relief without ever stepping into an operating room.

  • Myth: Stem cells aren’t proven.
  • Truth: While research is still emerging, there is strong evidence that bone marrow concentrate containing stem cells yields real results in the healing process. Patients are now empowered to ask questions and help inform their own decisions through growing research.

  • Myth: PRP Therapy is just a fad.
  • Truth: PRP treatments have been used for decades by top athletes, surgeons, and everyday patients. This is a well-established treatment regimen with proven results for various use cases.

  • Myth: Nothing will help me now.
  • Truth: Holding on to hope is the most important part of the healing process. Even patients who have suffered for years and thought they were out of options have been given a second chance at healing.

Regenerative Medicine Patient Suitability and Safety

Regenerative medicine offers minimally invasive alternatives for patients in pain. With virtually zero downtime after procedures, patients are able to get back to their lives more quickly. Using autologous therapy, or materials coming from the patient’s own body, there is minimal risk of allergic reactions or infections. Low complication rates and same-day procedures allow regenerative medicine to fit into the daily life of any patient profile. While the ultimate decision is up to patients, QC Kinetix aims to empower them with knowledge to make the right choice for their healing journey.

Regenerative medicine is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, or for anyone with an active infection and certain types of cancer. At QC Kinetix, the health and safety of patients is paramount, and providers will always review each patient’s medical history to determine if regenerative medicine may be right for them.

“Regenerative medicine is the missing solution in modern care,” explained Dr. Caravelli. “It fills the critical treatment gap between conservative treatments that may no longer be effective and invasive surgeries that many patients hope to avoid. For individuals standing at this crossroads, regenerative medicine provides a transformative, intermediate option—helping patients reclaim the life they want to live.”
