Aamer Rehman attended the Emerging Franchisor Conference for the first time in 2021. As a small business owner who has built his insurance and tax business over the last ten years, Aamer recently decided to take the leap into franchising. While trying to find ways to grow and promote his business, Aamer learned about the Emerging Franchisor Conference and decided it might be useful to attend. Aamer left his first Emerging Franchisor Conference with a wealth of knowledge, new mentor connections, and the tools he needed to take his business to the next level.

Now in 2022, Aamer is excited to return to the Emerging Franchisor Conference with a member of his team. Aamer shared insights into his first Emerging Franchisor Conference experience and gave a few words of advice to first-time attendees.

What was the benefit of attending Emerging Franchisor Conference for the first time?

The biggest takeaway I had from last year was that I am not alone, there are tons and tons of people that are either on the same timeline of their business as I am and/or they have been through this in the past, so they understand where I’m coming from, I can relate to them. We win together as a franchise community, that’s what I felt and that’s what I walked away with.

Was there anyone you connected with at Emerging Franchisor Conference you’ve continued to stay in touch with?

Augsto Alagia, he runs a painting business. He was similar, a young guy like me and we bonded over being in similar stages of our business. I was also set up with Nancy Bigley, through the Franship program.

That’s through the IFA?

Yes, before the conference I joined and signed up for the Franship mentor program. Someone from the IFA sent a list of two, maybe three people that I could potentially match with and I picked Nancy. We met for the first time at EFC and we’ve had a few conversations over the last year.

How did your plan for growth/expansion change after the Emerging Franchisor Conference?

Well in the last year since EFC, I’ve created a growth strategy. In the last few days, my FDD will be ready to be submitted. I’m actively pursuing the city of Dallas. I’m from Dallas originally, I used to live in San Antonio where I started my business. A few years ago I moved back to Dallas and we don’t have a location here. The goal is to actively market in the city of Dallas. The 2023 goal is to execute up to three franchise agreements and then every year increase that by 1 ½ %. So, 2024 5 [franchise agreements], 2025 7 [franchise agreements], and so on.

What advice would you give to an emerging franchisor attending the Emerging Franchisor Conference for the first time?

Just be a sponge, soak it all in.

What advice in general would you give to a potential franchisor or someone new in franchising?

Read books. There’s a lot of audibles on franchising. If you don’t like to read, you can listen to the books. Listen to podcasts, pick one to three that you like. I like Multiply Your Success and Franchise Secrets. Continue to educate yourself, make it a daily routine.
