International Franchise Association Airs Pro-Franchising Oscars Ad

30-second ad highlights opportunities in franchising, to air live during the 95th Academy Awards broadcast

WASHINGTON, DC – The International Franchise Association (IFA) ran a 30-second broadcast television ad during the 95th Academy Awards on Sunday, March 12, highlighting the value and opportunities created by the franchise business model. The ad seeks to raise awareness of the depth and diversity of entrepreneurial opportunities in franchising, as well as educate legislators and regulators that franchising is central to every community, everywhere.

“There are too many people who want to own their own business but don’t know where to start. That’s where franchising comes in,” said IFA President and CEO Matt Haller. “As IFA seeks to protect, enhance, and promote franchising, this ad raises awareness about just how many different types of business ownership opportunities are available in franchising. Franchising helps entrepreneurs go into business for themselves, but not by themselves.”

There are currently approximately 800,000 franchise establishments in the United States which employ over 8.4 million people, providing over $825.4 billion of economic output for the U.S. economy, and almost 3 percent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The franchise business model is put to work in countless sectors including personal care, home repair, painting, printing, restaurants, hotels, and child- and senior-care, among others.

Nearly one-third of franchise business owners said they would not own a business without franchising. In addition, franchisees of color, female owners, and veterans are represented at a disproportionately high rate. Around 26% of franchises are owned by people of color, compared with 17% of independent businesses generally.

According to Oxford Economics, franchised businesses on average pay up to 3.4% higher wages than their non-franchise counterparts. More than 65% of franchise workers are offered health insurance, a greater proportion than among small establishments in general, and more than three-quarters of franchise workers (76%) are offered vacation, holiday, and sick leave.
