IFA CALLS ON CONGRESS FOR A RETURN TO 40-HOUR WORK WEEK IN HEALTH CARE LAW

WASHINGTON, Jan. 8, 2015—On behalf of America’s 777,000 franchise establishments, International Franchise Association President & CEO Steve Caldeira, CFE, released the below statement following the passage of H.R. 30,  Save American Workers Act, sponsored by Rep. Todd Young (R-IN) and Dan Lipinski (D-IL), bipartisan legislation that would change the definition of a full-time employee in the Affordable Care Act (ACA) from 30 hours to the more traditional and widely-accepted standard of 40 hours.

“We applaud the House for passing legislation that is a win-win for both employees and employers. Restoring the 40-hour work week definition is a common-sense legislative fix to the Affordable Care Act that will put more money in the pockets of hard-working Americans and allow small businesses the flexibility they need to manage their workforce.

“IFA will continue to aggressively advocate our position through our broad coalition of more than 300 organizations representing millions of small businesses.  We respectfully urge the Senate to act promptly to pass this bill and send it to President Obama for his approval.  Although the President has threatened to veto this bill if it passes both chambers of Congress, we truly hope that he remains true to his statement he made the day after the 2014 mid-term election that he would be open and receptive to hearing ideas from Leader McConnell and Speaker Boehner on how to make responsible changes to the ACA to make it work better. Well, Mr. President, we are now one-step closer to you having that opportunity.”
