IFA STATEMENT REGARDING RESOLUTION TO REOPEN GOVERNMENT AND LIFT DEBT CEILING

WASHINGTON, Oct. 16, 2013—International Franchise Association President & CEO Steve Caldeira released the following statement today praising Senate leaders for reaching a deal to reopen the government and lift the debt ceiling, avoiding a possible U.S. default.

“We applaud the work by the Senate to set differences aside and act swiftly to avert a potential economic catastrophe by reaching a compromise that will provide business owners with some short-term certainty. But the continued crisis is having long-standing negative consequences on the confidence of business owners, who are feeling the impact of reduced consumer power and tighter credit conditions which continue to drive down sales and revenues for franchises nationwide.

“We urge Congress to pass legislation put forth by the Senate to prevent further damage to the U.S. economy and allow business owners the confidence to continue to create jobs. Reopening the government and raising the debt-ceiling will hopefully allow lawmakers to return to addressing the long-term challenges our country faces with entitlement programs, spending and tax and immigration reform.”

Working with the rest of the business community, IFA is engaging its grassroots advocacy network, Franchise Congress, to send letters to Congress urging a “Yes” vote on the Senate agreement.
