IFA JOINS COALITION TO ENSURE EFFECTIVE TAX RATES GUIDE TAX REFORM

WASHINGTON, July 23, 2013 – International Franchise Association President & CEO Steve Caldeira released the statement below today to announce the launch of The Coalition for Fair Effective Tax Rates. The mission of the coalition is to educate Congress and key stakeholders that tax reform should be viewed through the lens of effective tax rates, the amount of taxes businesses actually pay. IFA is an inaugural member of the steering committee of the coalition.

“As the push for passage of a tax reform increases, the franchise industry strongly believes that both the individual and corporate sides of the code must be reformed at the same time, given that we represent both individual and corporate tax filers, and both large and small businesses across many sectors such as restaurants, hotels and a variety of service-related businesses that account for one out of every eight private sector jobs in America.

“This approach will ensure that all businesses, including pass-thru entities and corporations, receive the much-needed tax simplification and rate reduction tax reform should provide. Our number one objective in this campaign is to educate legislators about how the current code provides a wide range of tax rates that industries actually pay, which causes our industry and our friends around the table to pay a much higher effective tax rate than almost all other business segments. At the end of the day, we hope legislators will choose to guide their comprehensive tax reform efforts through the lens of effective tax rates.

“Moving forward, we are committed to working with Congress to address these inequalities within the tax code so that we can ensure franchise businesses have the opportunity to maximize their vast potential (and proven ability) to create jobs.”
