Shelly Sun Elected to the Officer Corps of the International Franchise Association

SHELLY SUN ELECTED TO THE OFFICER CORPS OF THE INTERNATIONAL FRANCHISE ASSOCIATION
WASHINGTON, Sept. 24, 2013—Shelly Sun, co-founder & CEO of BrightStar Franchising, LLC based in Gurnee, Ill, has been elected Secretary of the International Franchise Association, placing her in the leadership chairs of the Association.

The IFA is the world's oldest and largest organization representing franchising worldwide. IFA members include franchise companies in over 300 different business format categories, individual franchisees and companies that support the industry in marketing, law and business development.
Sun is a Certified Franchise Executive (CFE) and joined the IFA Board of Directors in 2010. She serves on the IFA Finance Committee and the FranPAC President’s Council. She has chaired two special taskforces to review the IFA dues structure and governance policies, while also representing the industry various times through testimony on Capitol Hill and interviews in the news media, including broadcast TV. She was selected as the IFA Entrepreneur of the Year in 2009.

Sun has guided BrightStar’s rapid and strategic growth from three corporate-owned locations in 2005, to more than 250 franchise locations nationwide. When she and her husband, J.D., launched the BrightStar Care franchise, it was the first and only franchise company in the country to specialize in both medical and non-medical care and health care staffing. In October 2011, she published her first book, Grow Smart, Risk Less – a low-capital path to multiplying your business through franchising, where she discusses her journey as an emerging franchisor through rapid growth, lessons learned and game-changing ideas.
Sun holds a bachelor's degree of Science from the University of Tennessee and a master's degree of Science in accounting from the University of Colorado. Prior to BrightStar, Sun worked as the vice president of Finance for Avolar, a former division of United Airlines, and in executive finance positions with CNA Insurance and Blue Cross/Blue Shield.
Sun was elected to her IFA leadership position during the Sept. 16, 2013 IFA Board of Directors meeting, along with the full slate of 2014 officers, including: Steve Joyce, president and CEO, Choice Hotels International, who will serve as IFA Chairman; Melanie Bergeron, CFE, chairwoman of the Board of Two Men and a Truck, who becomes Vice Chair; and Aziz Hashim, a multi-unit, multi-brand franchisee and president & CEO of National Restaurant Development, will become IFA Treasurer. The 2014 slate of officers will assume their new positions Feb. 25, 2014, at the conclusion of IFA's 54 thAnnual Convention in New Orleans.
