Statement by Matthew Shay, President & CEO International Franchise Association March 23, 2009
Earlier today, Senator Specter (R-PA) announced that he would vote against cloture on The Employee Free Choice Act, commonly known as “card check.” Voting against cloture essentially prevents a filibuster proof majority. IFA members have urged Congress to defeat card check to provide a more even playing field when unions target specific business for unionization.
IFA President & CEO Matthew Shay made the following statement following Sen. Specter’s announcement. “We applaud Senator Specter’s decision to support small business owners’ efforts to operate their operations free of unfair and misguided labor policies. If enacted, this bill will severely harm small businesses across the country at a time when they are struggling to stay afloat.
“IFA support employees’ right to organize, but that is not what this bill is about. This bill replaces the law’s goal of fairness in union organizing with expediency, and it denies employees their privacy and their opportunity for a free choice during union organizing campaigns.
“We thank Sen. Specter for his leadership on this issue and we urge other members of Congress to follow suit.”
