WASHINGTON, D.C., Feb. 11 – Founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Brian Scudamore was today recognized by the International Franchise Association as Entrepreneur of the Year during its 48th annual convention being conducted at the Marriott World Center in Orlando.
IFA, founded nearly 50 years ago, first bestowed this award in 1982 to distinguish individuals who are building successful franchised businesses that have been in existence for at least three years. The association’s members operate in more than 80 industries and in more than 100 countries.
"The IFA is the world's largest and most trusted franchise association and an integral resource for franchise businesses across the globe," said Brain Scudamore, Founder and CEO of 1-800-GOT-JUNK?. “It’s a great honor to be recognized with this distinguished award by such a reputable organization.”
When he was 18, Brian Scudamore invested $700 in an old pickup truck and founded The Rubbish Boys, a company that 10 years later became 1-800-GOT-JUNK? As CEO of the Vancouver-based company, Scudamore began franchising his brand and in just five years guided the company to expand to more than 275 franchise locations. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? is now the world’s largest franchised junk removal service with more than 330 locations in three countries, 45 U.S. states and nine Canadian provinces.
Scudamore’s public relations tactics drove his business to its current success. While creating brand awareness for his company he also generated a positive awareness for franchising. As CEO, he mentors thousands of franchisees and prospective franchise entrepreneurs. The company’s corporate headquarters, the Junktion, hosts weekly tours of the 1-800-GOT-JUNK? business model and offers a question and answer session guided by Scudamore himself.
In addition to being featured in more than 4,000 news stories for its successes, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? has received numerous honors. Scudamore was inducted into the Young President’s Organization in 2004, served on the board of the Young Entrepreneurs Organization, won the Fortune Small Business Best Bosses Award and was a finalist in the 2007 Ernst and Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year award. 1-800-GOT-JUNK? participates in IFA’s VetFran program, an initiative designed to aid veterans in acquiring franchises; and Scudamore is a member of the IFA’s Franchisor Forum.
