WASHINGTON, D.C., Jan. 29 – Carlos F. Poza has been named vice president of international affairs of the International Franchise Association, the leading association for franchised small businesses that today span more than 80 different industries operating in more than 100 countries.  IFA’s mission is to protect, enhance and promote franchising worldwide.  Its membership includes more than 1,300 franchisors, 10,000 franchisees and 500 firms that supply goods and services to the rapidly-growing industry.

Prior to joining the nearly 50-year-old trade group, Poza served in foreign affairs positions for 20 years with the U.S. Department of Commerce’s U.S. and Foreign Commercial Service, holding key posts in Washington, D.C. and in embassies in South America and Europe.  He also served as a program and general development officer for the Agency for International Development where he managed multi-million dollar projects, and as a commercial attache establishing partnerships with local governments and organizations in Guatemala and Panama.

Later, Poza’s role shifted to focus on other countries before he became regional director for Europe in 1998 and ultimately assumed the responsibilities of deputy director general.  After leaving the Commerce Department, he launched an independent career as consultant and adjunct professor, teaching international marketing for the Washington Internship Institute.

Poza’s various positions have enhanced his experience working with organizations in global development, market research, trade promotion, analysis and formulation of business environment policies and transactional advocacy.  His knowledge of franchising will support the association’s efforts to develop innovative programs and new relationships, both domestically and overseas, to maximize international franchising activities.

Poza received a bachelor of arts in philosophy and psychology from Yale University and a master’s degree in international affairs from John Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies.  He is proficient in Spanish and conversational Portuguese.
